Within this category, up to a total of seven works, in any combination of genres that we publish, may be uploaded within a single file.

We will consider only one submission of up to seven pieces within this category.

No names, contact info, and bios within the file: Because we prefer to read submissions "blind" to be as impartial as possible, please do NOT include your name, address, and/or bio within the file you upload -- or within the file name itself. Instead, such details should be included in the appropriate boxes provided at Submittable.

Simultaneous submissions (aka sim-subs) are okay -- but please be professional and let us know upfront if any of your works are under consideration by other venues. Many thanks for immediately withdrawing any works that are accepted elsewhere.

Word Counts: Craft essays and critical reviews must be no longer than 2,000 words each, including author footnotes and references.

To meet the definition of flash (and to be eligible for nominations for awards like The Best Small Fictions), all other works whatever the genre must be no longer than 1,000 words each -- including text, title, and any footnotes. One-word titles are acceptable.

Please note that we do not count lines of poetry; word-count restrictions apply to lineated works as well.

Extra points for including, in brackets after the title of each piece, the genre, sub-genre, or hybrid; for example: [ekphrastic CNF/prose poem].

Complete guidelines are available at our website:

Thanks so much for your time and consideration. We look forward to considering your work!

Footnote re Our Marking System:

Only the acceptance of all pieces within a submission will result in us marking the entire submission with a green check mark in Submittable; if we accept only one or two of multiple works from the group, then we believe it’s more accurate to mark the submission as Completed (a blue status), since one or more pieces were not accepted. If we accept none of the pieces in the group, then we mark the entire submission as Declined (a red status).

We have used this system of marking submissions of multiple pieces since the debut of KYSO Flash in 2014, and learned only recently that a few writers object to the blue Completed status—much preferring the green status even when only one piece in a group has been accepted. This is why we now offer the single-piece submission category, “One piece for $2.”
